Who should do a recreational skipper’s ticket?
If you are 14 years or older and would like to hold a recreational boat driver’s licence, as required by the Department of Transport.
The course takes 4-6 hours and includes a revision of the theory, sit the theory test, practical training and then the practical assessment.
A pass mark of 80% or higher is required on the theory test before the practical test in which you will be required to show competence in a range of practical tasks.
We have a lovely 4.2m centre console runabout boat that is easy to use, this includes the fuel, lifejacket, instructor, test papers and certificate.
On completion of receiving a pass on the theory and practical assessment you will receive your Recreational Skipper’s Ticket certificate. The Recreational Skipper’s Ticket will enable you to drive any recreational vessel within Australia.
On the day of your assessments you need to bring your:
- Hat
- Sunscreen
- Water bottle
- Snack
- Consent form (if under 18 years old) WA’s Recreational Skipper’s Ticket - Letter of Consent (transport.wa.gov.au)
- Australian Driver’s Licence or Learner’s Permit (we use this to satisfy the ID and eyesight requirements. If you don’t have a licence then contact us to discuss the other options)
- Sun glasses and reading glasses (if required)
- Payment
- Medical Declaration (if required – contact us for more information)
Course Material
You need to read the Department of Transport’s RST Workbook prior to attending the course and do the online practice quizzes.
Workbook
The Recreational Skipper’s Ticket (RST) Workbook contains all the material that you will need to know to get an RST. It covers both the theory and practical sections of the RST assessment.
The workbook includes chapters on:
- Rules and regulations
- Collision avoidance
- Maintenance
- Safety equipment
- Trip planning
- Emergency situations
- Practical assessment
You will find a set of self-test questions at the end of each chapter (with answers at the back).
These questions are similar to those used in the theory assessment.
The workbook also contains instructions, drawings and notes on how to carry out the various practice skills that will be assessed.
